Philadelphia Shopping

Philadelphia -– Pennsylvania’s largest city and home of the liberty bell -– rings up revolutionary shopping opportunity, with the added bonus of no sales tax on clothing or shoes anywhere in the state. Center City shopping downtown includes The Gallery at Market East, the nation’s largest urban shopping center, along with The Shops at Liberty Place, a landmark with more than 60 shops from J Crew to Godiva Chocolatier. Three blocks east of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, historic Brickston Market Place East houses shops and restaurants including Ross Dress for Less, Dress Barn, Dunkin Donuts, and China Pagoda. The Bellevue, on Broad Street with Park Hyatt at The Bellevue, showcases Tiffany & Co., Nicole Miller, Polo Ralph Lauren and the like. University Square, on Walnut Street, has more than 80 stores around a hub of public green space with a brick plaza.

Antique Row, in the Rittenhouse Square district, features a broad variety of shows. South Street Antiques Market, hosting more than 25 dealers within the city’s only indoor antiques market, carries items from Victorian to funky ‘50s. Established in 1851, Jeweler’s Row is America’s oldest and one of its largest diamond districts, featuring more than 300 merchants and designers dealing in sparklers at up to 50 percent off retail. The King of Prussia Mall (America’s largest retail complex with more than 400 stores) hosts Bloomingdale’s, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Strawbridge, JCPenney, Sears, and that’s only for openers.

As a discount shopping mall anchored by Boscov’s, Burlington Coat Factory, Marshalls Megastore, and Modell’s Sporting Goods, the 200-store Franklin Mills features bottom basement prices for brand names such as Neiman Marcus, Polo Ralph Lauren and Kenneth Cole. Manayunk -– named a National Historic District in 1983 -– hosts more than 70 chic boutiques and galleries, with some 30 restaurants.
